The Williams College Department of Music presents Professor Walter Frisch in a lecture sponsored by the Class of 1960 Scholars Fund entitled, “Meet the Wizard: Harold Arlen, Over the Rainbow, and American Popular Song.” Prof. Frisch presents his lecture in Room 30 in the Bernhard Music Center on the Williams Campus on Thursday, April 5 at 4:15 p.m. This free event is open to the public.
The songs of Harold Arlen (1906–1986) are far better known than his name. Working with a variety of top lyricists across forty years, from about 1930 to 1970, Arlen composed many of the standards of the Great American Songbook, including Stormy Weather, Get Happy, Come Rain or Come Shine, Blues in the Night, and the classic score for the film The Wizard of Oz. This lecture will explore the richness and variety of Arlen’s songs, which are at once formally and harmonically complex, and powerfully expressive. Arlen’s peers, like Gershwin and Berlin, recognized him as a master of his art. His songs were taken up by some of the finest singers of the 20th century, including Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Barbra Streisand. In addition to recordings by some of these artists, Prof. Frisch will consider Arlen’s own remarkable performances as arranger, singer, and pianist, which reveal him to be one of the most complete musicians of the golden era of American popular song.

Abstract: We will begin with a remarkable mechanical device from ancient China, and work our way to one of the foundational theorems of modern differential geometry, hopefully leaving you convinced that any map of the earth's surface must necessarily cause some distortion. I will not require any background other than a comfort with basic calculus, but will rely on your visual intuition and your trust on some technical details we will set aside. I hope in return it to give you a window into how geometers in the 20th century think.

Abstract: In this talk, I will give a systematic introduction to probabilistic modeling as an approach to address a range of pressing computational challenges in biology. I will formalize the theory of Markov chains and the construction of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), mathematical systems that are widely applicable as statistical models of real-world processes. I will then sketch out dynamic programming algorithms (including the Viterbi algorithm) used to find the most likely sequence of hidden states that resulted in the sequence of observed events. By the end of our discussion, I hope to clarify how probabilistic modeling can effectively address the significant challenges in gene prediction and motif discovery.
